Bridgewater Township is located in Somerset County. It's both a regional hub for Central Jersey and a major "bedroom suburb" (commuter town) of New York City in the much larger New York Metropolitan Area, located within the heart of the Raritan Valley region. Bridgewater's population is around 44,000. The township was purchased from a local Lenape Native American tribe in 1749, created from portions of the Northern precinct, and incorporated in 1798. It was named after the town of Bridgewater in the English county of Somerset. In the nineteenth century, parts of Bridgewater Township were taken to form Warren Township, Branchburg Township, Somerville, Raritan, and Bound Brook.
